The PH scale
In room 15 we have been learning about the PH scale and we did an experiment testing different liquid based objects such as baby oil, jelly and other things we used tea as the indicator and used an eye dropper to pour the tea into the thing we were testing.
We did the experiment in our class with room 19 we learnt that coke is very bad for you but diet coke is actually worse than normal coke because they take out the sugar and put in another acid.
Some of the things we tested were quite astonishing such as mayonnaise which is actually quite acidic and Sunsilk shampoo which is extremely acidic and jelly which is really acidic because of all the sugar that gets put into it but not everything is really acidic Listerene mouthwash is quite alkaline and toothpaste which is neutral.
There is one thing that is quite astonishing bottled water it is really acidic but normal tap water is neutral which is quite strange.

Science
In room 15 we have been learning all about science and we have been researching about physical changes and chemical changes. Physical changes are when a change occurs that can be reversed back to it's original state for example; you can melt an ice cube and it will go back to being an ice cube. A chemical change is when a change has occurred that can not go back to it's original state, often a new substance will form. For example; when you have spoilt milk and you can't repair it.

Keeping it Real
Over the previous five weeks Room 15 have been busy creating C.V's to apply for important positions within our classroom. Our next step is to have an interview with our teacher. On Monday the 2nd of May, Mr Giles came to speak to us about the interviewing process and what to expect. We learnt all about how to dress, speak and act in an interview situation. It was very informative and we will use this new information that we have learnt in our own interview with Mrs Woodgate.

The junior and middle school learnt all about road safety, our class learnt all about being confident and assertive when dealing with bullies and strangers. It was an enjoyable day, thank you Constable Dean.

Funky Feet Day in the Huia Pod
On Friday the 1st of April our pod had a funky feet day. We were able to wear whatever we liked on our feet for the day. We were sorted into four groups and each group was given a giant shoe to collage. We had a day based around the theme of feet because this is our Pods logo - 'Putting our best foot forward'

Piet Mondrian Art
This term our focus for the visual arts is based on the artist Piet Mondrian. Mondrian used the simplest combinations of straight lines, right angles, primary colours, and black, white, and gray within his art work.
Examples of his artwork:
We began by creating our own piece of computer generated art which reflected his style. Currently we are working on our own paintings using this artists model. Here are some examples of our work:

Procedural Writing
Our Focus for this term has been on procedural writing. After spending many weeks looking at the elements of a procedure we all wrote our own with the aim to cater to the five year old children within our pod. Last week we visited room 14 and taught our procedures to the children, it was a great way for us to see if we had covered all the parts of a procedure and if our own were able to be followed.
Huia hanging out together!!!
Each week the Huia pod get together for Pod fitness, we enjoy being with each other and joining in with fun activities. For our year 5 and 6 children this means taking on leadership roles and running the games and the activities for the rest of our pod. Check out these pictures to see us all in action!
